Warfare

From Tetro Files

Warfare is defined as a large-scale violent conflict between two or more groups of organisms. Warfare has existed on Tetro in most Pyronate cultures since the beginning of recorded history. Originally it arose as a method to resolve disputes, by pitting the warring groups' strength, determination, and intelligence against each other. Biohistorics believe that this evolved as an instinctual behavior intended to catalyze the process of natural selection. Over time, as stable permanent settlements developed, warfare came into use more as a tool by which to achieve an end, such as acquiring land for a project or convincing another group or individual to accede to demands. This is still the primary cause of warfare today, with the exception of the current Dramilian Federation-CSA conflict, which is the only war of ideologies known of since the beginning of recorded history.

[edit] Military Technology

Since the advent of warfare in prehistoric times, the weapons, armor, vehicles, and equipment of military forces have evolved considerably. The advancement of military technology has also significantly contributed to technologies in peacetime. The methods and tools of warfare have progressed through 12 distinct eras.

Era 1: unarmed combat, one representative from each faction fights; whoever is thrown from a high cliff loses

Era 2: unarmed combat, anyone willing to fight on each side engages the enemy in one-on-one grappling; attempting to throw opponent from a cliff

Era 3: Armored combat-soldiers wear suits of spiked armor and ram each other, attempting to destroy opponent's armor or throw from a cliff. Any soldier who has been disarmed flees the battlefield.

Era 4: Soldiers fight from inside manually-powered vehicles that are heavily armored; throwing from a cliff becomes impractical due to a broader range of theatres of war; thus goal of combat becomes capture and ransom of enemy combatants. Vehicles have spiked armor and attempt to disable each other, attempt to dock with other vehicles from a strategic position, board and capture occupants of opponent's vehicle.

Era 5: Similar vehicles used to those in era 4, but with mechanical projectile and melee weapons used to disable enemy vehicles from a distance

Era 6: Fire is discovered; for a short time mechanical catapults are used that shoot burning projectiles with the hope of burning opponent's vehicles to the ground.

Era 7: Fireproof armor is invented; combat styles regress to those used in era 5.

Era 8: Hydrogen production and combustion is harnessed; combat remains similar to that of era 7, but self-propelled hydrogen rockets are used for the first time. Mechanical computers gain popularity and are used at military bases for calculations and simulations related to battles, but are not powerful enough to be used for targeting or real-time calculations. Mostly used for information storage.

Era 9: Hydrogen- and manually-powered aircraft invented and used for reconnaissance; cannot be used for combat because battle units of opposing sides are intermingled and no targeting technology exists. For the same reason, ground troops are unable to shoot down aircraft.

[edit] Military Strategy

The advancement of military technology has caused the primary strategies employed by military leaders to change drastically over time, although many basic tenets have held true across multiple eras of warfare.
